Risk Assessment

Everyone's safety is of top priority and because so many people are involved in the making of our programme we need to ensure that we think about all the saftey hazzards that we could possibly be faced with. As well as making sure that any work we do is carried out safely

Programmes Used

We used two main programmes for our project.

1) We used Adobe Premiere - To produce our title sequence and main news item

2) We used Dreamweaver - To produce the website

If Adobe Premiere was not available to use we would have used 'Final Cut'

<<<<

Making the website

Below are some screen shots that we took of the finished website.

This is the homepage to the website, we discussed what should be on this page and why and decided that the main story was a definite to put on there as well as the 'horrendous' weather conditions.

This screen shot shows the weather page for our website.

Tools Used

Throughout our project we used a number of different tools to help us make our project as professional as possible.

Below is a list of all the tools we used...
1) Tripod

2) Video Camera

Without these tools we would not have even been able to start and produce our finished product.

Adobe Premiere

This is a screen shot of the main screen menu for Adobe Premiere

Designing the logo

We thought that it would be best to keep the logo simple so that it did not detract from the footage.

This is our logo
We thought that this was a good logo because it only has two colours which gives it a more formal feel and look.

Deciding on Runi's Costume

Next we had to choose the outfit that would be most suitable for a news anchor to wear.

These were the two costumes that we narrowed it down to....

I did not think that this outfit was appropriate because it was quite bland and I dont think that it stood out enough for a main News anchor.

We chose this outfit because Runi felt comfortable in it. I also thought that it added a bit of colour to the outfit while still looking professional

Recording Runi ( ITV NEWS Anchor)

Before we could even begin to start recording Runi we ran into a few problems...

1) First problem was LIGHTING. The room that we had planned to use for recording did not have the right lighting and it was not clear enough to see the SE1 News background. Another problem that we had with the lighting was that the low lighting did not go well with the tone of Runi's skin and Runi's height it was hard to see her through the camera lens and we decided that this location wasnt going to be good enough.

2) Second problem was FINDING ANOTHER ROOM. After walking around most of the school trying to find a classroom that had an interactive whiteboard and projector we finally found one that was quiet and not in use.

3) Third problem was FINDING THE PROPS. After realising that the majority of news programmes are filmed with the anchor sitting down at a desk we had to find a desk that was suitable enough while still looking professional. After already having a problem with Runi's height we had no choice but to stack SIX chairs one on top of the other so that we could visibly see her in the lens. The next problem was finding a table high enough to get in the camera range too.

< This shot shows our attempt at making the table high enough, first of all we stacked the tables on top of eachother. This method did not work. Next we tried stacking books under the stacked tables, this STILL didnt work.

Our final attempt LUCKILY worked! I came up with the idea of me sitting underneath the table (out of view of the camera) holding the table up, as well as Runi crossing her legs to hold up the other side.

More edited photos for website

This image looks very bland and does not stand out enough for our website. Like the pictures before Faye editied this picture and this was the result >>>>

Photo's for the website

There are several different pictures that are used on the website to make it eye catching for the reader as well as being easy on the eye and interactive.

This was the orignial photo, but it did not look very original and Faye changed the colours to make it look brighter

This is the edited version of the picture >>>>

Website Pages

We decided that the pages that we would use on our ancillary task would be:

1) The home page

2) The weather page

We decided to do a weather page because weather has quite a significant feature in our programme and the topic is something that affects everyones every day lives.

Starting the Website

We decided for one of our ancillary tasks that we would design and make a website.

We looked at several different News websites and found that there was many features that were found on every website page. These are the features that we have decided to use on our own website. They are listed below...

- Logo
- Top Story
- Breaking news feature
- Weather
- Navigation Bar
- Internal links

We also decided that we will add some videos that we recorded of PC Harding that we did not put in the news programme but that we still thought was relevant and useful.

Editing Problems

We began to edit the video on two different user names, we soon found out that this was not possible to do because there was no way of transfering the two edited pieces to enable us to put them together. Which meant that all the editing had to begin again, right from the very start.

As we were only able to use one account to edit on (which was mine) Faye is only able to edit when I am around to give her my password and username for my user account. This has sometimes made editing very difficult and at times very stressful and inconvinient and has limited us to how much editing we can do at any one time.

By using one computer, we also find that the other one of us usually gets bored or easily frustrated but we understand that there is no way of us being able to get round this and this is a problem that we are just going to have to learn to deal with

Copyright permission

Now that we have found the clip that we want to use for our programme we now have to contact ITV NEWS to ask for their permission to use the music. Even though we did not get the tune from any websites or sources linked to ITV, they still have copy right over the material.

Here is a print screen of the email that I sent to them:

Here is the email reply that we got back from them:

Finding the appropriate Music

To begin with we thought about composing our own little theme tune so that the whole project would be original and our own. However on second thoughts we realised that this idea would probably take up a lot of our time as neither of us are very musical and this was not the most important aspect of our task. We found this website http://www.televisiontunes.com/ and decided that we would use this as the source for finding our theme tune. There were several different theme tunes for ITV NEWs that we could have had but we chose to use the one that we did because it was the most modern. This is the music clip that we decided to use

It has taken over 5 hours to process this video and it has still not finished!!!!

Smoother Clips

Today I started looking at other options for editing the clips together, I decided to listen closely to the clips and listen to what was said in each clip to see if that would help me to decide what to do.

After listening to the clips carefully I decided that some of the points that were brought up by PC Harding were very important and needed to be highlighted.

I came up with an idea that would overcome my problem of editing the clips as well as high lighting the points that need to be made clearer.

MY SOLUTION

I came up with the idea of bringing in small and short clips of the subjects that PC Harding is talking about with her voice over.

For example a clip will start with her saying about how she believes society can tackle anti-social behaviour (through more after school facitilies) the shot will then change to an after school activity but with the continuation of her views over the top of the audio.

Putting the pieces together

After managing to put the rough cut of the title sequence together I tried to join this section of the programme to the interviews that we did with PC Donna Harding. This wasnt as easy as I thought it would be.

Instead of doing the interview continuously, we stopped recording after clip. When we tried to put this together it did not flow smoothly enough and it was obvious that it had been edited together. Considering that ITV NEWs programmes are usually recorded live it was not an option for us to have jumps between shots, the video has to look as real life as possible.

I looked at several different transistions that could possibly be put in the footage to help it flow better, but did not think that any looked realistic enough. This proved to be a problem.

Next lesson I plan too look and see if there are any possible ways that I can make the footage look more realistic while at the same time running as smoothly as possible.

More technical problems

I had planned to do some filming over the weekend but because there were not any video camera's free to use I took it upon myself to use my own camera. I used the camera to try and film some shots that we could use that were based around the subject of anti-social behaviour. While looking at them on the camera I felt that they had come out pretty well.

My opinion changed instantly after I had uploaded them onto the school network. To begin with the videos could not even be viewed on the network because of the file format, after this problem had been overcome I was able to compare the quality of the videos. The footage that was taken on my camera was not up to the same standard as some of the filming that we had done using the schools camera.

After a discussion with Faye, we decided that it was best not to use this footage because there would be an obvious change in the quality of the programme and this would not look very professional.

Technical Problems

As we carried on doing small clips and items for our opening sequence, it began to come clear to us that the filming we had done did not look as professional as it should do.

The video above shows how unsteady the recordings were and this was mainly due to the tripods not being available for use. We decided that we could not risk using these videos for our media if we were serious about getting a good grade. Our final decision was to leave filming until we were able to use a tripod and until then, carry on blogging and doing any final bits of research that we thought would be of any use to us.

Naming The Programme

Now that we have started making our opening title sequence we thought it would be a good idea to start thinking about different names for our programme.
These were some ideas that we came up with:
1) Sunrise News
2) London News
3) South East London News
4) Central London News
5) SE1 News

I did not like the first name that we came up with because I was conscious that it was a news programme rather than a morning television show and I was worried that the word 'sunrise' would give this impression.

I felt that the second idea was too vague and too bland and was not a name that would stand out and be remembered easily.

I did not really like the third option because I thought that this name was too long and would be quite a mouthful to say for the reporters in the programme itself.

The fourth option was a close contender because it was straight to the point, easy to say and remember, however I did not think that this choice was original enough for our programme.

Our final decision for the name of our programme is SE1 News. I think that this name is good because it is short and easy to remember and it sums up what the programme is about. We picked SE1 because it is the postcode for the majority of london and the area that we wanted to cover in our news report.

The title sequence

After looking at several of ITv's news programmes opening sequence, we decided that we would have to make a decision on the stories that were going to feature in our programme before being able to start filming them.

Deciding on what order to put the clips was considerably harder than we first thought it would be. We came to the decision that the main story had to take 'centre stage' and this meant that the clip showing the graffiti would have to be made very clear.

Pictures of videos in title sequence

I thought that it would be a good idea to video some 'ASBOs' so that we could use it in the title sequence and in the introduction as well.

We managed to rally together some of friends and asked some of them to bring in hoodies, some of them conviniently forgot but I didnt let them get out of it and I managed to find some extra hoodies in lost property. Me and one of my friends also brought in some empty wine bottles (I know this is a stereotype but we did it anyway).

I shot the video and took two takes. I did one bit of footage through an open window, but I decided that this looked TOO professional and did not look like CCTV. So I recorded it again and did it through the windowl.

<<<<<

This snap shot was taken through a closed window and this is the camera angle that I decided to use. I chose this angle because I thought that the angle looked more like CCTV footage than the first one and the suns rays reflecting on the window makes it look more authentic.

Putting the beginning together

We found that there were many different formats and approaches that different news programme used, but we felt that for our news programme we should use a format that in some ways is simple but very effective.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NWleJNfO0g

This is the ITV News video that we decided to base our news programme on. The style for this video is commonly found on several of ITV news programmes.

We decided to use this clip from ITV news as our focus because we thought that it made good use of time, the theme tune and the opening sequence fitted in appropriately by including images of the news items that they were going to talk about in the following programme.

The RAC Van - Title Sequence

Every news programme has a section about the weather and we decided that our news programme should have a weather section too.
At the time of filming the majority of the country was hit with bad weather warnings and heavy snow fall and we decided to use that to our advantage. We decided that the main item for our weather would be based around the icey and snowy conditions.

On our way to film the snowy conditions, we came across a van that was stuck in the snow and while some of us tried to help move the car, others decided to film it. However after looking back at the video we decided that we could actually use this footage in our programme.

After looking at the quality of the video we decided that it did not look professional enough for our programme but we decided to still use it and say that this was a video sent in from one of 'our viewers' at home.

The Fly Over - Title Sequence

We decided that one feature that is very common in many news programmes is an item on traffic. As a result of this we decided to film over a local fly over, filming passing cars on the motorway.

We shot two video's but only decided to use on of them.

Below is the 1st orignial video

Below is the 2nd original video that we shot

We decided to use the second video because we thought that it gave a better view of the cars driving past and it also showed more cars at any one time when compared to the 1st video.

The Clock Tower

The closest thing that I could find that had any similarities to the Big Ben was the clock tower in bexleyheath and we decided to use this to start off our title sequence.

Making the title sequence

We looked at several different title sequences for different news programmes and we found that, especially with ITV, they included quick snap shots and film clips of the stories and news items that they were going to cover in the programme.

As a result of this we decided to do the same, because the weather was snowy for a very long time we decided to use this to our advantage and shot small video clips of people broken down in the snow, which is the clip that we have decided to use.

We also decided that we would use the clock tower in Bexleyheath Broadway as our own version of the Big Ben in London.

We also thought about many events and circumstances that are happening in and around london at this current time and we decided that the current recession was still extremely relevant, as a result of this we have included a short clip of a graph in our title sequence which shows a moving graph which conveys the rise and fall of the economy.

The interview with Mr James Heath

We asked Mr Heath the same questions that we asked PC Harding and we found it very interesting because we found that many of the answers that he gave were very similar to ones the Donna Harding had given up, which reiterated the opinions of many in the local community.

Due to the fact that so many of the answers and reasons given were so similar we decided to look through and listen to each clip from both Mr Heath and PC Harding and we made several choices about which answer we thought was best and why.

We also found that we had to do a considerable amount of editing with Mr Heath's clips too because we felt that some answers may be seen as being very long winded. I also looked at severeal of ITV's news programmes and found that it was very rare for them to stay on one clip for more than 1 minute at a time.

The interview with PC Harding

We met with PC Donna Harding at Belvedere Police Station and we chose to film the footage in one of their less formal interview rooms.

Below is the list of questions that we asked her

) From your own experiences what do you believe are some of the main causes of Anti- Social behaviour?

2) What suggestions would you give to combatting Anti- social behaviour and making those who are offending understand the wrong they are doing?

3) In your opinion do you believe that Anti- social behaviour is on the decrease since the introduction of PCSO's?

4) What are your views on the new policing pledge and do you feel that this is a positive step forward?

5) Do you feel that there are enough PCSO's and police officers patrolling the area and why?

6) Why did you choose to become involved in the police force?

7) Do you think that there is a certain group that are commonly known for being involved in Anti- social Behaviour?

However we did not think that it was appropriate to use all the film that we recorded so we cut down on many of the clips, we also editing some down because we felt that there were some parts of the answers that PC Harding gave us, which were more important than others.

The clip shown above is film footage that we orignially recorded. However as mentioned above, we cut out certain parts of the video because we felt that the whole clip was not needed.

Conatcting a local youth worker

As we decided to base our main news item around Anti-social behaviour I thought that it would be a good idea to have people with different positions in the community. As we have already contacted the PCSo's in the local area, I decided to contact a local church youth worker so that we could get his views on the subject.

Below is the email that I sent to him

This is the reply that I recieved

Choosing the location

There was several different locations that we thought would be of good use to use to us, especially when filming Alison. We thought about using a derilict house with boarded up windows (before realising that we didnt know anywhere that there was one), we thought about recording outside a school (but realised that we needed permission to film, just incase there were any pupils around) and the final idea was to to find somewhere with vasts amounts of graffiti. I found a local recreation ground near where I lived and found huge walls filled with graffiti (which we later found out was actually legally put there and also funded by the council).

Here are some Photographs that I took of the graffiti...

Contacting the Safer Neighbourhoods Team

One of the main jobs of the safer neighbourhoods team is to patrol the local area so that there is a strong police presence on the streets. One advantage of these patrols is that it deters many young people away from the area and prevents the likelyhood of anti-social behaviour occuring.

As the theme for our news report is anti-social, I thought that it would be a good idea to interview a PCSO about their thoughts on anti-social behaviour in the area and for them to make comments on reasons why they believe it is on the increase.

I contacted them via the bexley borough council website ( shown below)

Below is the email that I sent them...
