What is a Safer Neighbourhoods Team?

The officers on your Safer Neighbourhoods team spend most of their time out on patrol in your neighbourhood, meeting the community and identifying and dealing with those crimes and issues you have told us cause you most concern. Therefore, your team adjusts its shift pattern to address these priority issues. Your Safer Neighbourhoods team wants to hear from you. If your call is not answered, please do leave a message on the answerphone or send them an email. A member of the team will get back to you. Safer Neighbourhoods teams are not there to provide a 24-hour response, this is the role of response team officers. Response team officers do pass on information to Safer Neighbourhoods teams as appropriate.

Getting used to the equpiment

Now we have decided what subject we are going to use for our main news item. I have decided to practise using the new equipment as I have not used it before.

Here are some video's that I did as I was practising ( without the use of a tripod)

A tripod was not available and that is why the film isnt very sturdy.

I decided to film the graffiti because I thought that it was one of the many stereotypes that go with anti-social behaviour.

Target Audience

ITV NEWS has a very specific target audience of adults between the age of 32 - 50. Although they aim the majority of their news items to this audience, they do occassionally cater for slightly younger and slightly older people too.

As we decided to base our programme on ITV NEWS we thought it would be a good idea to cater for the same age group. However we thought that it would be a good idea to talk about subjects that would be of interest to younger people too. That is one reason why we chose to talk about anti-social behaviour. Anti-social behaviour affects everyone in the community - from young people with ASBO's to other young people who may be stereotyped but completely innocent, to older people who may be mistreated or distressed because of the effects of anti-social behaviour.

Questioning the Decision

After looking at several different news programmes I began to doubt my ability to be able to produce a news programme that would be anyway near the same standard as many televised programmes.

I started to look at some of the other briefs that we were given the choice of picking from and began debating whether or not a music video would be more suitable and easier to complete. However after thinking about having find music that was not copy righted I decided against the idea and chose to stick with my initial idea and continue with the news programme.

Chosen Subject Idea

We have decided on the subject of Anti- Social Behaviour (ASBO) for our news report. We decided on this subject because we felt that it was a subject that a lot of our peers are faced with at this moment in time.

We also felt that this was a very current topic because the government have just released a new document known as the 'policing pledge' which concentrates on tackling anti-social behaviour.

The policing pledge can be found on the link below
http://www.met.police.uk/pledge/our_pledge_leaflet.pdf

I decided to interview different members of the community on their thoughts of the growing problem of Anti- Social Behaviour. As a result of this I have emailed the local safer Neighbourhood team which is made up of one sergant and two PCSO's.

Using Google search engine I found bexley Boroughs Metropolitan site and managed to contact the team Via the website.

Below is a copy of the email that I sent to them...

Hi,

Our names are Lauren and Faye and we are currently studying A2 Media at The Grammar School for Girls Wilmington. However Lauren lives in Erith and we thought that you would probably be the best team to ask. As part of our coursework we are creating a 5 minute news report and we have decided on the topic of Anti-Social Behaviour. We were just wondering if it would be possible for us to do a 2 minute interview with a member of your team? Many Thanks and we look forward to hearing from you soon!

Lauren & Faye

Time Management

One major difference between my AS coursework and my A2 coursework is that instead of working individually I have to work with someone else.

The first problem that we came across was being able to find time when we were both available to plan, record and edit our coursework. To overcome this problem we decided that it would be best if we wrote down all the times that we were able to do the coursework and then agreed on two definate times each week, that we would both keep free so that there would not be any misunderstandings. On top of these two seperate occassions, we agreed that if there happened to be any times after school that we could both do, we would meet up and do some more coursework ( if we needed to).

BBC News - The History

The British Broadcasting Corporation, more commonly known as the "BBC", is the longest and largest running broadcaster in the world, providing services to BBC radio as well as television channels such as the BBC News, BBC Parliament and BBC World News.

BBC News is also making increasing efforts to keep up with advances in technology and have begun introducing mobile services to mobile phones and PDAs. Desktop news alerts, e-mail alerts, and digital TV alerts are also becoming ever more availiable to BBC fans.

BBC Television Centre at White City, West London.
Ratings figures show that during national crises such as the 7 July 2005 London bombings or a royal funeral, the majority of the UK audience turns to the BBC's coverage as opposed to its fellow rivals such as ITV News or Channel 4.

Which is a testimony to the detailed coverage of stories that the BBC provides.

Sky News - The History

Sky News is a 24 hour international news broadcaster with an emphasis on UK and international news stories.
The service places emphasis on rolling news, including the latest breaking news.

Currently broadcasting from a news centre in London. Sky News started broadcasting on 5th February 1989 as part of the then four-channel Sky Television service. The channel currently has seven UK bases each with their own correspondents and reporters and the channel also has a wide range of resources provided by its parent company News Corporation such as reporters from Fox News Channel. When major breaking news reaches the SkyNews room, it has more recently started to change back to the presenting style with two presenters anchoring.

In March 2000 Sky News Active was launched, a 24-hour interactive service providing headlines along with other services such as the weather, the top story of the day and showbiz on television demand.
Sky News is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation via his holding in British Sky Broadcasting. Murdoch said of it in March 1992, when he was the full owner:

"Taking nothing away from CNN which has done an outstanding job, I would point out that Sky News, the Fox news service and the News Corporation's combined reach - which have together over three thousand journalists spread over every continent and every country - leave us with an army of news gatherers second to none both with regard to their access to news and ability to bring news from anywhere into people's homes"

ITN

ITV News is the name of the news programmes on the British television network. It was brought by Independent Television News (ITN) in September 1955 and is still currently under the same management. ITV news is extremly well known for its well informed news coverage on some of the most horrific and intriguing news stories to date. ITV news has also produced some of the most well known news reporters of the 21st century such as...

BBC News 2008

This opening sequence used by the BBC is very modern and pictures a constant, moving 3d globe. By using the globe as the main focus of the title seqence the viewers are given the impression that this programme is going to cover topics that will effect all areas of the world.

ITV News Revamp 2009

ITV have recently changed the theme tune and opening sequence of their news programme, the new sequence reflects a modern feel which is more likely to relate the younger audiences that ITV are trying to appeal to.

In comparison to the 2009 revamp sequence, this ITV news opening sequence is considerably basic. This opening sequence is based solely on one of the capitals most famous land mark buildings, Big Ben. Having this as the main focus of the title sequence quickly makes the viewers aware of the origin of this news report.

News Logos

I am going to begin my research by looking at different logo's that news channels have used in order to promote their programme.
